The Green Web

This website supports The Green Web Foundation and it’s ambition to turn the internet Green. This website supports The Green Web through:

Using a Green Web Host Provider

This website is hosted by Kualo, which is 100% powered by renewable energy sources.

Local servers and CDN

The majority of this websites users are based in the UK, as such our primary hosting servers are in the UK. Around 25% of visitors come from other countries from across the world. To help make for a better experience for these users, and to reduce energy usage, this website uses a CDN, CloudFare.

Content Delivery Networks (CDN’s) keep a cache of some of the largest files this website uses in locations from all over the world. When a user visits from the West Coast, these files are served up from a CDN local to them. This means the website loads faster for the user, and less energy is used as the files do not have to keep traveling the large distance each time.

Carbon Offsetting

A percentage of ad revenues from this website goes into a Carbon Offsetting fund as from June 2021. This goes towards planting trees around the world including in the UK from July 2021.

Further Improvements Coming

In addition, I am currently working on reducing the processing power requirements of this website. This includes using less fonts and libraries as well as reducing the size of images and videos.

Finally, if you have any additional thoughts on how to reduce this websites carbon footprint? please let me know.
